N¥MPHOSIS

The name N¥MPHOSIS comes from the cliché of metamorphosis - mystified as though it were a magical act resulting in something "beautiful" when it’s probably painful, and certainly dangerous; the most interesting part of the process being the gunk that happens in between states, the intermediate state.

It also comes from nymph, obviously, a term that because of Greek mythology conjures again the "beautiful" but could also be rather regarded as a horror show of a being, an immature, grey sort of exoskeleton coming into full-fledged life. Still preliminary, not completely functional.

When placed together, these weird figures inevitably project narratives. The sickening sticky system of codependence. The inevitability of being wrapped into one another. Why are we one body, not a system?  Why are discussions of THE BODY centered on the singular?

The spines are the skeletal nymphosis.  The exoskeleton has been sucked in, which is only possible in the digital iteration, because the physical world is doomed to optical illusions. These works have been painted to appear as though you see through them - we know it's not true, but like some fucked up love, we want to believe in the fantasy.
